What is the importance of nectar in a hummingbird's diet?

Sustained Flight: Hummingbirds have one of the highest metabolic rates of any bird species, requiring them to consume large quantities of food to fuel their constant hovering, flying, and foraging activities. Nectar provides the necessary energy for sustained flight and foraging bouts. 

Efficient Digestion: Hummingbirds have specialized digestive systems that enable them to rapidly metabolize and extract energy from nectar. Their long, specialized tongues and high metabolism allow them to efficiently process large quantities of nectar.
