Hummingbirds truly are icons of beauty in the bird world

Like orchids, hummingbirds are beauty icons. I recently thought of this after seeing hummingbirds.

The annual Tubac HawkWatch in southern Arizona drew birders hoping to watch common black-hawks and zone-tailed hawks migrating from Mexico. I spent five days there.

The birder in me wanted to see those hawks, which I had never seen, while the naturalist in me wanted to see everything. March is too early for Gila monsters, but suitable for hummingbirds.

The Americas are home to all 366 hummingbird species, belonging to the same family. Colorado has only 13 hummingbird species, some only once or twice. Arizona is a good place to see hummingbirds, with 18 found.

The Paton Center for Hummingbirds in Patagonia serves hummingbirds and their fans. The Tucson Audubon Society manages the family house, which became a hummingbird hotspot.

In addition to pathways and a desert garden, the Paton Center has hummingbird feeders where visitors can view the birds from tables and chairs.
